In a recent development in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and money laundering, a Dominican woman has been sentenced for her role in distributing fentanyl and laundering its proceeds. Īna Checo, 42, was found guilty of possessing seven kilograms of fentanyl as well as one kilogram of valeryl fentanyl, an analogue of the deadly drug.

According to court records, Checo delivered $58,510 in drug proceeds to an undercover officer for laundering in June 2019. She was identified as a member of a large-scale drug trafficking and money laundering organization working with drug suppliers based in Sinaloa, Mexico. The organization was responsible for receiving narcotics, including fentanyl, from the suppliers for distribution in Massachusetts.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has made it clear that combatting the opioid epidemic is its top priority, and this sentence underscores their determination to identify and bring to justice those responsible for putting deadly fentanyl on our streets. Fentanyl is a highly addictive drug that continues to cause tremendous damage to communities across the country.

Checo pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and 100 grams or more of valeryl fentanyl, as well as one count of money laundering conspiracy. She was sentenced to 135 months in prison and five years of supervised release on December 7, 2023.
